How do you make sense of a psychedelic journey?
These experiences are often described as ineffable or hard to describe. So where to begin?
The revised Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ30) is a valuable tool for understanding your psychedelic experience, shedding light on how it has transformed your thoughts, actions, and overall well-being.
Studies have shown that higher MEQ30 scores correlate with improved well-being and have demonstrated a reduction in symptoms of several mental illnesses. High scores have shown correlation with long-term positive therapeutic outcomes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, cancer-related distresses, and substance use including tobacco, cocaine, and alcohol addiction.
High scores have also been found to predict positive changes in attitudes, mood, behavior, and openness. These findings have been demonstrated across mystical experiences occasioned by the use of many psychedelic medicines including psilocybin, DMT, Ketamine, and LSD.

Interpreting your MEQ30 results
The Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ30) can be a valuable tool for understanding your psychedelic experience, shedding light on how it has transformed your thoughts, actions, and overall well-being. It measures intensity of a journey, but can be helpful in a few ways:
- Asking questions of your experience that help you digest your journey in a different way
- Providing you a barometer of intensity of your journey compared to other journeys, other journeyers, and other substances
What does my result mean?
The MEQ30 is designed to give you a sense of how intense your psychedelic journey was. It can help you understand how you interacted with the medicine, dosage, and your set and setting. Additionally, it can help describe an otherwise ineffable experience, giving you means to compare it to prior experiences. Whether the experience was good or bad, fun or meaningful, and how you incorporate into your life beyond, is up to!
Making the most of the journey
While the goal is not to maximize an MEQ30 score, studies have shown that higher MEQ30 scores correlate with improved well-being and have demonstrated a reduction in symptoms of several mental illnesses including long-term positive therapeutic outcomes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, cancer-related distress, and substance abuse. Beyond severe mental illness, high scores have also been found to predict positive changes in attitudes, mood, behavior, and openness.
Your MEQ30 result is broken down into four factors, based on the types of questions administered:
- Mystical: Feelings of unity, ultimate reality, eternity, freedom, fusion, and reverence.
- Positive mood: Sensations of amazement, tranquility, ecstasy, joy, and awesomeness.
- Transcendence of time and space: Pertains to the loss of a sense of space and time during the experience.
Ineffability: The sensation that the experience cannot be adequately described using words.
Each of these factors, on their own, can produce a meaningful impact in your life. The breakdown allows you to see where the impact of your journey stems from. With these scores in hand, you might work to improve certain factors in subsequent journeys by creating habits aligned with each.
For instance, a meditation practice could help prepare for transcending time and space. Or spending time in nature or in prayer may improve your ability to touch the mystical. Furthermore, a practice of play or dance could help you to access a positive mood. There are many things you might incorporate into your day to day that could improve your ability to maximize each factor. This is a great area to work with your guide on during integration.
